image The East Hampton Arts and Culture Council is dedicated to the cultural and economic advancement of the visual, literary and performing arts in the Town of East Hampton by bringing together the town’s arts and cultural organizations and providing them with informational resources to further their missions.

EHACC grew out of the Arts & Culture Subcommittee that was formed in 2000 to advise the Town of East Hampton’s Comprehensive Plan. After nearly two years of meetings and intensive discussions, in February 2002 the subcommittee recommended the establishment of an Arts and Culture Commission under Town auspices to unify, coordinate and promote artistic and cultural activities in the town and broaden community access to them. This recommendation was accepted in principle, but the town took no action. Nevertheless, former subcommittee members were energized by the planning process and decided to follow through on the recommendation independently.

An ad hoc group, mostly former subcommittee members, met in April 2004 to discuss the proposal. The group concluded that not only is such an association necessary, but it has the potential to become an influential advocate for the not-for-profit arts and cultural organizations located in East Hampton Town. During subsequent meetings a mission statement and by-laws were drafted. EHACC has achieved not-for-profit status, and should be fully operational by Spring, 2007.

EHACC’s purpose is to coordinate, promote and lobby on behalf of its members. Not-For-Profit arts and cultural organizations—of which there are more than 30 in East Hampton Town--make significant contributions to our local economy. The high quality and rich diversity of resources in our community is a magnet for cultural tourism, one of the fastest growing segments of the leisure market. And within the community itself, those resources enrich the lives of year-round and part-time residents. EHACC’s goal is to bring them together for the common good. Groups that work cooperatively gain increased visibility. Sharing resources is cost-effective and helps avoid conflict and competition. Complementary or collaborative programming encourages audience development, and joint marketing ventures have proven economic benefits.

PROPOSED EHACC SERVICES

As an information outlet, clearing house and discussion forum for member organizations, EHACC’s web site will offer a comprehensive calendar of events, publicize special promotions, address issues of concern to the arts and cultural community, and provide links to members’ web sites.

EHACC will facilitate partnerships, joint ventures and coordinated activities among its members.

EHACC will serve as liaison between its members and the Town of East Hampton, and will advocate for recognition and resources to strengthen the role of arts and culture in community life.
