SURFACE LIBRARY GALLERY hosts
“Wood Fired Clay”
Asian-Inspired Pottery by Ted Tyler
August 6th – August 15th, 2010
Opening Reception: Saturday, August 7th, 5 - 8 pm
Potter Ted Tyler unveils his most recent Asian-inspired clay creations in Wood Fired Clay, a solo exhibition hosted by SURFACE LIBRARY Gallery. Using traditional wood firing techniques combined with various ash, slip and glaze applications, Ted Tyler creates an Asian influenced expression combining color, texture and form. Tyler’s designs and colors are one-of-a-kind, beautifully subtle and organic. In celebration, SURFACE LIBRARY Gallery will host an opening reception on Saturday, August 7th, from 5 – 8pm. The exhibit will be on display through August 15th, 2010.
“My work in clay is in the Asian tradition of happenstance, chance happenings throughout the process of creation that allows the plasticity of clay combined with the relentless nature of fire and ash, to find an expression outside of the artist’s control”, explains Tyler. Starting with loosely thrown forms, Tyler quickly applies slips with large brushes, and finally subjected to 3 to 4 days in a wood fired kiln at extreme temperatures, pummeled by wood ash and fire, the forms take on a life of their own.
Ted Tyler currently creates his pottery at ShadrowClay, a small ceramic studio located in Springs. His formative training was by well-known Japanese potter, Teruo Hara, in Virginia.
