Inspired by the Light: Landscapes by East End Masters
Saturday, June 21st FREE Opening Reception: Members Preview 4-5pm; General Public 5-6 pm
An exhibition featuring three of the most renowned Landscape painters of our time who are all East End residents: Jane Wilson, Jane Freilicher, and April Gornik. Each of these artists in their own unique way has transformed the landscape and created a personal vision. The landscape painting may start out inspired by a particular place but is soon imbedded with a perspective that the artist alone brings. Jane Wilson paints very mood evocative works by applying layer upon layer of oil creating the most unique atmospheric visions. Jane Freilicher has painted vistas from her Water Mill studio for close to 50 years; each is its own interpretation and most often not a literal one. April Gornik, who lives on the East End full-time, states that she values the ability of art to move her emotionally and psychically. She makes art that makes her question, that derives its power from being vulnerable to interpretation, that is intuitive, that is beautiful. Each of the artists was the recipient of the Guild Hall Academy of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award.

Guild Hall’s exhibition will focus on major early works from the late 1950’s to the early 1960’s when Rivers was at the forefront of the New York art world. At this time Rivers was one of a group of artists associated with the Pop Art movement, characterized by artwork that reproduced everyday objects of American popular culture. Rivers, however, was also known as one of the first artists to uniquely merge objective, narrative art with the non-objective and abstract.
Rivers’ main themes from the period of this exhibition are history, family and friends. Paintings will be on loan from key museums and include History of the Russian Revolution and The Greatest Homosexual from the Hirshhorn Museum, Double Portrait of Berdie from the Whitney, Portrait of Berdie, Number II from the Metropolitan Museum, O’Hara Nude with Boots from the Larry Rivers Foundation, The Last Civil War Veteran from Louis Acorsi Collection and Dutch Masters and Cigars III from a private collection.
